Don’t Forget Tibet

26 08 2008

The Olympics are over, the Olympic flame has been extinguished and the athletes are on their way home. So are 10 foreign protesters – 8 American, 1 British and 1 German-Tibetan – who were arrested by the Chinese Government for ‘Free Tibet’ demonstrations in Beijing and have consequently been deported. Some of them were only released after 10 days in custody and after the US Embassy in China released a statement bringing attention to the arrests. Several journalists were also remanded in custody for their coverage of these protests.

The Games on the whole are being hailed by many as a success, in more ways than one, and whilst the change in the architectural landscape of Beijing is evident, it seems the eyes and attention of the world has had no effect on China’s dubious human rights policies. It is now the hope of many that these abuses will remain at the fore of people’s minds post-Olympics. The Australian Tibetan Council is attempting to do just that with an ad campaign that Channel Seven refused to play during the Closing Ceremony, but was played on other channels simultaniously.
