Among the global doom and gloom it seems no-one can escape the financial crisis and that includes the local film industry. Traditional areas of revenue such as broadcasters and advertisers are not keen to hand out money like they used to. The South Australian Film Corporation however has just announced an initiative called Film Lab, in which they hope, will see eight locally produced low-budget films over the next three years. To explain a little more about the project chief executive of the corporation Richard Harris joined us on the line.
It’s been an eventful year for the South Australian Jockey Club, first the sacking of supremo Steve Ploubidis and the rest of the board and only days ago it was found the head of its parent body Phillip Bentley knew about vote stacking for board elections and endorsed it. Now the troubled organization is to be overseen by a Parliamentary inquiry after an Opposition motion was passed in the Upper House. Opposition racing spokesman Terry Stephens talked to Owen Teakle this morning about what this will mean for racing in South Australia.
The Federal Government’s proposed internet filter has caused a storm of debate, with the most highlighted fault being that it would cause massive unnecessary delays. However, a Sydney-based internet service provider Exetel may have found the solution. It’s called “whitebox” filtering technology, developed by a New Zealand company, and Exetel will be using it for an independant trial. To explain more about the filter Peter Mancer from Watchdog Internation, the creator of the filter, joined us on the line from London.

Next week sees the introduction of the plastic bag ban in South Australia. As of next Monday, you will not be able to have your groceries put into a plastic bag at the supermarket, having to be bring your own environmentally friendly bags, or purchase them at the shops. This is going to have a big impact on waste in South Australia and campaigner for the Conservation Council of South Australia James Dandenberg spoke with Peter Godfrey this morning to explain the positive environmental impacts.
Fair Trade is a growing global movement advocating for a fair deal for Third World Producers, for products such as coffee, tea, & chocolate. When a product has a Fairtrade symbol, the consumer is guaranteed that the producers were paid fairly for their product, had good working conditions, that sustainable farming techniques were used, and that NO child labour was used.
There are already over 400 Fairtrade Towns in the UK. In Australia there are presently only two Fairtrade Councils – the City of Yarra in Victoria and Manly Council in NSW. The Adelaide City Council’s recent committment to becoming a Fairtarde Council through the Fairtrade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ) has made it the first capital city Council in Australia to adopt these methods.
The Council now has to convert to using at least 50% Fairtrade tea & coffee in all its offices, business units, meetings, and functions and create a community steering group to help it achieve its other goals around promoting and increasing the use of Fairtrade products within the Adelaide City Council.
Jacqui Emery from World Vision in Adelaide explained to Peter Godfrey a little bit more about what it meant for the Council to go fairtrade…
The controversial Gunns Pulp Mill could be under construction as early as September. Many hoped the project was dead and buried with Gunns long-time banker, ANZ deciding the public backlash against the prject would create far too many negatives. But now Gunns is seeking international finance, but if GetUp! can get their message across, investors will be as nervous as the ANZ was.
Peter Godfrey asked GetUp! Campaigns Director, Ed Coper, what the focus is of their new advertising campaign regarding the pulp mill’s foreign investment hopes…
