Christchurch Earthquake Update

About 80 per cent of earthquake-ravaged Christchurch remained without water last night as civil defence services urged people to stay at home.

People in the city have been told to conserve water by not washing or flushing toilets, to collect rain water in buckets and to boil all drinking water.

Meanwhile power has been restored to 60 per cent of the Christchurch area.

A 10-thousand-strong student volunteer army has gathered in New Zealand via social networking site Facebook to help those suffering in the wake of the devastating disaster.

The group is working closely with Civil Defence and is currently focusing on helping people in low risk areas with non-life threatening situations.

Police have called the destruction of the CTV building unsurvivable, with estimates of between 80 and more than 100 for those missing inside.

No more survivors have been discovered in the CBD since Ann Bodkin was rescued from the Pyne Gould Corporation building yesterday afternoon after being trapped for 26 hours.

But the general situation remains grim, with the confirmed death toll last night at 75 and 300 people still missing. Police expect this to climb.

To give us the latest details on the situation, Catherine Zengerer was joined once again by New Zealand correspondent Selwyn Manning.

She asked what the current situation is this morning.
