Coal seam gas is a form of natural gas extracted from coal beds that has, in recent decades, become an important source of energy in many countries, including Australia. In Queensland particularly, CSG is an important energy resource and production of this gas now makes up an increasing proportion of Queensland gas demand. The Queensland Government recognises that landholders face increasing pressure for access to their land for gas and other resources exploration and development. Tara, in the Darling Downs, 300 km Southwest of Brisbane, is one such place that is rich in this ever expanding resource and is also the site of recent protests against the CSG industry as it plans to expand production. Last month one such protest involving Landholders and concerned residents saw the arrest of many including long time environmentalist, Bob Irwin. Jess wingard spoke to Bob Irwin and she asked him what his concerns were about this form of mining.
