In Western Australia the public may soon get access to an online register of paedophiles.
The State Government is putting the final touches to new laws which, for the first time in Australia, would open up sections of the National Child Offenders Register.
Photographs of child sex offenders who are avoiding police and have gone underground will be posted online. Photos of other known offenders may be published at the discretion of the police commissioner or police minister.
Parents and guardians will be able to request information about people in their neighbourhood. Lawyers’ groups, though, are warning that the website will encourage vigilante action.
So is this a breach of civil rights or a necessary initiative to protect our nation’s children?
Tim Brunero spoke to Dr. Allan Perry from the Law School at the University of Adelaide to discuss this new legislation and what he thought of the attempt to make it harder for people to commit these heinous crimes.
