Western Australia to expose paedophiles

In Western Australia the public may soon get access to an online register of paedophiles.

The State Government is putting the final touches to new laws which, for the first time in Australia, would open up sections of the National Child Offenders Register.

Photographs of child sex offenders who are avoiding police and have gone underground will be posted online. Photos of other known offenders may be published at the discretion of the police commissioner or police minister.

Parents and guardians will be able to request information about people in their neighbourhood. Lawyers’ groups, though, are warning that the website will encourage vigilante action.

So is this a breach of civil rights or a necessary initiative to protect our nation’s children?

Tim Brunero spoke to Dr. Allan Perry from the Law School at the University of Adelaide to discuss this new legislation and what he thought of the attempt to make it harder for people to commit these heinous crimes.

Plastic bottles, cans and glass are some of the mundane things that come to mind when you think about recycling… But what you may not realise is that recycling can create beautiful things too.

For National Recycling Week, Planet Ark is encouraging people to hand in their old printer cartridges, batteries and mobile phones that can be turned into everything from pens and park benches to jewellery.

Tim Brunero spoke to Brad Gray, the head of campaigns at Planet Ark and delved into some pretty innovative recycling measures.
