Coming Out as a Comedian

Lori Bell is no stranger to the Aussie Comedy scene. She’s a two-time Adelaide Fringe winner, winner of the 2008 Melbourne Greenroom Award and has even toured nationally with Puppetry of the Penis as her alter-ego, Granny Flaps.

But where did it all start out for her? When did she come out as a comedian?

Jennie Lenman caught up for a chat with Lori about life, comedy and coming out. They started  by talking about her solo Feast show “Up Late and Loose”.

Junk Food Advertising – Is Government Regulation a Healthy Alternative?

It’s 6 30, you’ve just got home from work, an advertisement for a fast food joint hits your TV screen and you want nothing more than to get your hands on one of those deep fried delights. As adults we are vulnerable to junk food advertising, so you can imagine the influence such advertising has on children.

Self regulatory measures have recently been introduced in Australia to prevent junk food advertising during children’s programs and shows viewed by a child audience of 50% or more. However a recent study conducted by the CSIRO has found these voluntary limits to be ineffective.

Jane Martin, Senior Policy Advisor from the Obesity Policy Coalition, joined Jennie Lenman to talk about where the responsibility lies.

Farmers Turn Truckies

No matter how much cereal you might munch on in the morning, it’s nothing compared to the thousands of tonnes of grain our South Aussie Farmers have been hauling across the land.

Currently our farmers are facing high transport costs and congestion – they’re even having to try their hand in truck driving.

Michael Schaeffer, Member of the South Australian Farmers’ Federation Grain’s committee joined Jennie Lenman and began by discussing what’s driving farmers to get behind the wheel.

Save Our Forests

Did you eat breakfast at your kitchen table this morning? Maybe you’re still cosy in bed? Or perhaps you’re so enthusiastic about work that you’re sitting  at your shiny, wooden desk.

Sadly, these pieces of furniture may have once been trees in non-sustainable Aussie forests.

Independent organization, Markets for Change, recently undertook a year-long investigation into Australia’s logging industry and the facts they have dug up are alarming to some; timber takes a complicated path before ending up in our stores.

GetUp, the community advocacy organisation, say that logging can be a sustainable industry, if we are willing to pay a little bit more.

Australia boasts the highest number of threatened extinct species per capita globally and deforestation is only destroying more habitat. Paul Oosting from GetUp joined Jennie Lenman to talk about the campaign to protect our native forests.
