Autonomy for the Torres Strait

Elders in the Torres Strait are calling for immediate action on autonomy amid fears that self-governance might once again slip away.

Mr Robert Sagigi, also known as Uncle Bongo is a traditional property owner and grandson of Chief Sagigi of the Wakaid Tribe.

“The Queensland Government has taken our Human Rights of existence backwards by taking away the Community Services Act which was considered to uphold our unique Island Custom” Mr Sagigi has said.

Nunga Wangga’s Andrea Fraser and Eddy Peters caught up with Uncle Bongo to hear what he had to add on this very important issue for the Torres Strait.

But for the homeless, Christmas can be the hardest time of the year.

This year Australia’s homeless shelters are packed to the rafters and unable to meet current demand. The situation is so bad that couples with children are most likely to be turned away.

Alison Verhoeven from The Institute of Health and Welfare joined Jennie Lenman to discuss.
