Nearly one thousand asylum seekers have died since 1998, and the most recent accidents at sea have emotions running particularly high.
This Sunday at 4pm, the Pilgrim Uniting Church will have a multifaith service to honour the ninety asylum seekers who died last week when their boat capsized near Christmas Island.
The event will also remember the lives and hopes of many others who have died seeking asylum in Australia.
Angus Randall spoke to event organiser Rabbi Shoshana Kaminsky about the service.
