In Australia, one in five people will experience a mental health problem or illness each year and 45% of people will experience a mental health problem or illness at some point during their lifetime.
And the peak mental health body believes there has been too much focus on declining bed numbers and not enough on helping patients.
Some of the major issues in mental health include anxiety and depression, substance use disorders, and longer term conditions such as anxiety disorders, chronic depression and schizophrenia.
The Mental Health Coalition of South Australia has said that most people affected by mental illness only spend a very small part of their lives in mental health beds.
Angus Randall spoke to Geoff Harris from the Mental Health Coalition about addressing mental health.
