‘Closing The Gap’ With COAG

Since being elected into parliament, Kevin Rudd has promised ‘Bridging The Gap’ between the Aboriginal and Torres Strait islanders as one of the top priorities.

Yesterday’s COAG meeting focused on indigenous issues in particular indigenous health and the methods of state spending on the indigenous community.

The community led ‘Close the Gap’ campaign have been monitoring the COAG meetings closely to see if the Federal and state governments will follow through with a commitment to a genuine partnership with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.  

Tom Changarathil spoke to Dr MICK ADAMS, chair of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation to get his reactions.

Unions Applaud Fair Work Australia

The RUDD Government’s Fair Work Australia industrial laws came into force this week sparking an official end of the unpopular Howard era Work Choices.

Under new system will see the return of unfair dismissal laws and reinstating collective bargaining.   

Unions have applauded the new laws, with some unions wasting no time in pushing for pay rises.

To discuss the new system and what it will mean for union power and workers Tom Changarathil was  joined by  Janet Giles Secretary of SA Unions on Breakfast with Peter Godfrey.

Swine flu- Is there reason to panic?

The Swine Flu Epidemic has been a consistent headline grabbing story for the last few months.

The world death toll has continued to rise, including the death of one South Australia man, while more cases of infection and quarantine have been popping up in Australia and the world.

Health organisations across the globe are calling for calm, telling people to be aware but not alarmed, yet the papers continue to have panic inducing headlines the latest being “SWINE FLU WILL KILL MORE CHILDREN”.

To separate the fact from the fiction Tom Changarathil was joined by retired Adelaide University Professor of Mocular and Bioscience Dr Chris Burell  on Breakfast with Peter Godfrey.

Weir water could be contaminated?

The building of the proposed Wellington Weir has been pushed back to August amongst concerns that the water behind the weir would be susceptible to blue-green algae outbreaks that could harm Adelaide’s water supply. Democrat’s MLC David Winderlich is one of those concerned about the possible ramifications of the Weir on drinking water and is calling for a report into discovering whether would be drinkable. Mr.Winderlich told Peter about why he thinks a report is an important step.

Is Aquaculture good for the marine environment?

Yesterday State Government minister for the environment PAUL Caica announced an expansion to the States aquaculture program, which will continue the farming of seafood in the Spencer Gulf, increasing South Australia’s ability to export seafood both domestically and internationally. However the mass farming on fish may not be the best step for the sustainability of the environment. Shen Dycer from the Wilderness society told Peter about the impact they can have on the environment.

Last Ride

The Last Ride is a new movie starring HUGO WEAVING and TEN YEAR OLD South Australian actor TOM RUSSELL.

 It’s a road movie, following a trip to Adelaide by Weavings character KEV, and his son CHOOK. Kev is a small time thug grappling with the relationship with his son.

 Peter spoke to both TOM RUSSELL and director GLENDYN IVIN, who says the appeal of the story was its universal theme about parents and children. Peter asked him though, given Kev’s flaws, what is the universal element…

Non-violent resistance against US/Australia military exercises

Australia’s defence force will be joining with the US military for joint exercises soon. The Talisman Saber are biennial exercises to test ADF/US combat readiness and interoperability, they get underway in a weeks time focusing on operational and tactical interoperability through a high end, medium intensity scenario involving live, virtual and constructive forces.

Meanwhile, anti-war veteran Ciaron O’Reilly is planning on a non-violent resistance to the exercises.

Ciaron has been involved in many such actions, including disabling a U.S. war plane prior to the invasion of Iraq.

While Peter’s description of the purpose of the Talisman Saber exercises came from the ADF website, Ciaron gave us his take on it…

Harvesting storm water – but not enough

Plenty of rain has fallen over the past 24 hours, and as we know most of it ends up in the gulf. But there have been increasingly loud calls for storm water harvesting across the Adelaide metro area.

This week it seemed the state government had finally heard those calls, and announced its ‘Water For Good’ plan. A plan that the government says will ensure our water supply to 2050 by harvesting up to 60 gigalitres a year.

But a number of experts say the time frame is too long, and we should aim to be harvesting that amount of storm water within 10 years.

Peter asked Greens MLC, Mark Parnell what he thought was a better target and volume of water…

Behind Closed Doors Of The Liberal Party

The latest NEWS POLL published yesterday showed support for Malcolm Turnbull as the leader of the federal Liberal party falling in the wake of the ute-gate affair. The poll brought with it the usual responses after a bad; he has the support of the party… or that moves were afoot to replace him… or that the only poll that counts is on election day.
