Australian tourism has got quite a hiding lately, with huge numbers of British tourists not coming here, because of a 112% rise in passenger duty applied by the British government, which could cost a family of four up to $700 in fees and charges if they wanted to travel to Australia.

One airline has suggested that the tax could result in up to 10million passengers not flying in the next 12 months.

As the Copenhagen Climate Change talks began yesterday, 56 newspapers around the world published the same editorial calling for decisive action on climate change. 45 countries heard the message with the editorial published in 20 languages including Chinese, Arabic and Russian. Roughly about seven months ago, the breakfast show did a story on the jumps horse racing issue and the call by animal ctivists groups calling for a ban.

The issue has come to surface once again when Racing Victoria Limited announced last week that the 150 year old tradition will come to close at the end of the 2010 season.  The stake holders are hoping to reverse the ban order… and unconfirmed reports suggest that they may have a winner on their hands.

This week, President Obama’s announcement of deploying over 30,000 troops into Afghanistan as part of a surge operation was met with expected mixed reactions.

As part of this announcement, was the revelation to commence withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan starting July 2011 and hopefully ending by 2013.

A motion passed at the last Burnside council election, 6 – 5 for a meeting of electors over the proposed sale of the Chelsea cinema.

A special meeting of council will discuss cancelling that meeting tonight.

In a report on the ABC website, Burnside Councillor Julian Carbone says he was intimidated and bullied into voting for the meeting.

As the federal governments Emissions Trading Scheme crumbles ahead of next weeks climate change talks in Copenhagen, broader discussion on means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions must continue.

Business SA recently released their ‘Greenprint for the future’, and amongst its recommendations is for South Australia to pursue the development of a nuclear energy industry, and be involved with nuclear waste storage.

Pro-nuclear advocates are pointing to the potential of the fourth generation nuclear reactors as being safer and more efficient than existing reactors, and having the capacity to reduce current stockpiles of nuclear waste by being powered by the waste.

Water is always a heavily contested issue in this country, especially in South Australia, in regards to how to sustainably manage it, and in effect… make sure we don’t run out.

But imagine not being able to readily access even just one glass of clean water, because the closest water source is more than a kilometre away.

For the people of a small community in Namwendwa, in Uganda, this is their reality.

However an Australian-run organisation, who help the African village on a regular basis, is trying to fix this problem.

To raise funds, they’re holding an outdoor movie night this weekend, with proceeds going towards installing a bore hole at the Namwendwa Primary School, which will provide 2000 children and teachers with access to clean and safe drinking water.

You don’t normally think of a disease as having a face, but in the case of HIV/AIDS, it has almost 33 million of them, because that’s how many people worldwide are living with it. While Australia’s figures pale in comparison to other countries, there are still around 17,000 people living with HIV in this country, and over six and a half thousand have died from AIDS in the last twenty-five years.

HIV diagnoses in the Indigenous population increased by four per-cent from 2004 to 2008, mainly because of a lack of education and prevention measures in place.

The Resale Royalty Right for Visual Artists Bill has just passed through Federal Parliament.

Under this legislation, visual artists will receive royalties for their work when it is re-sold on the secondary art market, bringing Australia in line with many other countries around the world.

Under the scheme, artists will receive 5% of the sale price each time their work is re-sold for $1,000 or more, and that right will continue for the same length of time as copyright in Australia, which is 70 years after the artists’ death.

Australia’s largest annual survey of young people has found that drugs, alcohol and body image are the biggest worries for 11-24 year old South Australians with one in four regarding each as major concerns.

Concern over increasing greenhouse gases tend to concentrate on the level of CO2 in the atmosphere, but our oceans are also being affected.

The first ever Australian report card on the impact of climate change on our marine environment was released on Friday.

More than seventy marine scientists were involved in the work, which has found Australian ocean temperatures are warming, changes in marine biodiversity and ocean acidification.

There has been fiery debate in West Australia’s Parliament recently over the government’s legislation proposing greater stop and search powers for police, with comparisons made to Nazi Germany.

The legislation, known as the ‘Criminal investigation Ammendment Bill 2009′ would allow police to search people for weapons and drugs in public areas without having to prove grounds of suspicion.

As expected, these proposed laws have caused an outrage among civil rights groups as well as others, but what exactly do the new laws mean and how much do they impinge on civil rights.

John Halsey, a Professor of rural Education at Flinders University, is pushing for secondary-school students to be given the chance to live in regional areas for a term. 

He says the lack of people willing to work in regional areas is developing into a national crisis.

John had planned to call for such a program when he presented during the 2009 Elford Lecture at Flinders University last night, and he joined Peter on the line this morning.

With the housing crisis effecting people everywhere, another government policy could make the situation worse and discourage teachers from taking up positions in country areas.

The Australian Education Union is concerned by plans to cut government housing.

These plans were announced in last Decembers mid year budget review, but the AEU say their repeated requests for more details haven’t been answered. Last week they wrote to Premier Mike Rann to clarify the plans.

We’re known as the Festival State for very good reason, and next year should really show what we can do with the 50^th anniversary of the Adelaide Festival to kick of what will be a packed-full year.

Over the weekend a radiation leak occurred at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in the United States.

The plant is operated by Exelon Nuclear, who issued a statement saying an “Airborne radiological contamination alarm” sounded in the plants unit one containment building. That unit has been shut down since October for refuelling, maintenance and the replacement of a steam generator.

An increased reading was detected at a temporary opening cut to allow the new steam generators to be moved in.

The company say there was no threat to public safety but 150 workers were sent home.

The Medical Association for the prevention of war are concerned about the companies’ apparent dismissal of the possible health consequences of the leak… 

Peter spoke with Dr Bill Williams, President Medical Association for Prevention of War and asked what exposure of this kind means.

After two years of waiting, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders will get a national representative body by 2011, as announced on the weekend by the federal government.

The new body will be based on a model recommended by Social Justice Commissioner, Tom Calma earlier this year, and called ‘The National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples’.

The Government is providing $29million over four years for the body, and unlike its predecessor, ATSIC, says senior and respected Indigenous Australians will oversee the integrity and ethics of office holders and candidates as part of a new ethics council.

To speak more about what this new body will mean for Indigenous people in Australia, Peter spoke with South Australian Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement, and former ATSIC Commissioner, Klynton Wanganeen on whether he is happy with the new deal…

Tensions on Christmas Island flared over the weekend, with reports of a bloody fight between around 150 Sri Lankan and Afghan asylum seekers that resulted in 37 people needing medical treatment.

With the detention centre approaching its full capacity, there is concern that tensions could escalate further, so besides the crowding, what is causing friction between detainees and what can be done to avoid further fights?

Peter asked Campaign Coordinator from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Pamela Curr, if there been any official response as to what led to the weekend’s fighting…

Running 6,000 kilometres to highlight issues of climate change really highlights how serious the issue is… and a group of emergency workers are doing just that.

The Copenhagen Climate change talks are drawing nearer, and talk of what will or won’t be achieved is escalating.

Many are starting to suggest the talks won’t result in a global agreement on greenhouse gas abatement, if that’s the case will the talks be deemed a failure or a positive step towards reducing the threat of climate change?

Former diplomat Tony Kevin is author of “Crunch Time” which examines both the crisis facing the environment and of the global financial crisis.

He said this morning that a failure to achieve a global agreement on carbon cuts, won’t mean the Copenhagen talks will be deemed unsuccessful…

For the past week, the state government has been trying to sell the bigger picture benefits of the St Clair reserve land swap.

Attorney-General Michael Atkinson has been talking up the importance of the swap as an integral part of a Transport Oriented Development and the tram line extension to the western suburbs.

There has been a lot said about the issue of violence against women but what is rarely talked about is domestic violence against men in relationships.

According to male Advocacy group, One in Three, 435,000 Australian men have experienced violence from a current or previous partner.

Up to one in three of those were victims of sexual abuse, while at least one in three victims of family violence are male.

A national police operation, ‘Operation Unite’ will flood late night entertainment strips and public transport next month to rid the streets of drunken violence and crime.

The weekend blitz on the 11th and 12th of December will see a huge increase in the police numbers in troubled nightspots of Glenelg and Hindley St. But the Opposition is calling the increase a media stunt that will not change the overall amount of crime on the street.

Late Wednesday night Greens MLC, Mark Parnell’s Voluntary Euthanasia bill was narrowly defeated in the Legislative Council – eleven votes to nine.

But, he says, the bill will be back before the upper house next year after the election.

So, what is needed to get this bill through not just the upper house but the lower house too?

Incidentally Colombia holds the record for the most landmine victims in the world.

We’re a lot more aware of what we eat these days, and of how important it is to eat well. But one area where we may be lacking in knowledge is of what’s in food we buy, specifically what additives.

A review is underway by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) of our current food labelling laws, but the public consolation period finishes tomorrow.

Organisations concerned about additives, GM components and nano particles have been urging people to make submissions but the timeframe to do so has been less than a month. Greenpeace have called for the public submission period to be extended and Laura Kelley from the organisation spoke with Radio Adelaide’s Peter Godfrey this morning.

Birthdays for most of us are a time to celebrate, but for children living in state care, coming of age can mean losing their government assistance and for some their home. 

According to the Create Foundation, the peak advocacy body for children in care, up to sixty-five per cent of young people leaving this care aren’t receiving any guidance to assist them. 

This means many end up unemployed, in trouble with the law or homeless. 

Jackie Reed is the CEO of the Create Foundation and she joins Peter this morning.

Doctor Rodney Tolley, an ‘international walking expert,’ is in Adelaide this week to talk about the importance of walking and present ideas from around the world on how to get more people walking more often. 

His visit is being hosted by the Heart Foundation in an attempt to increase recognition that the way we have built cities is not only bad for our health, but also bad for the environment. 

Dr. Tolley has led hundreds of workshops and classes in communities across the world dealing with active, sustainable transport. His first presentation will be held this morning and he joined Peter for a chat this morning.

You may not instantly recognise the name Charlie Boorman, but you’d be likely to know of some of his adventures. He’s ridden motorcycles around the world with his mate, Ewan McGregor, for a series called The Long Way Round. Travelled through Africa, competed in the Dakar Rally and most recently completed another journey – Sydney to Tokyo, By Any Means.

A book of the trip has just been released, and while adventure is a large component of the trip, he also highlights the work of many people and organisations in third world countries that he meets along the way.

Peter spoke with him yesterday about the trip. It’s name comes from how they travelled, basically by whatever means was available…and of the many different modes of transport he used, boats are his least favourite.

Negotiations on an Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement took place a couple weeks ago in Korea. The outcome could have serious ramifications for internet users and Internet Service Providers.

Under a proposed international treaty, internet users could be cut off from their ISP after 3 illegal download complaints, with the ISP potentially liable if they fail to act.

But what was discussed seems shrouded in secrecy, as Peter Coroneos Chief Executive Internet Industry Association told Radio Adelaide’s Peter Godfrey this morning.

It was described as democracy at work…and a violent confrontation, last nights Burnside Council meeting on the future of the Chelsea Cinema was a heated affair.

150 people clashed with councillors over the councils plan to sell the cinema, but a motion was passed to put the decision to the public.

The Federal Government is currently blocking a successful South African software developer from moving to Australia because under the migration rules, as a quadriplegic he would become a $460-a-year burden to the economy. 

And just last year the Immigration Minister Chris Evans was forced to overrule his own department after they denied a German doctor and his family permanent residency because his son has Down’s syndrome. 

Professor of Public Law at the University of Sydney Law School, Professor Mary Crock and her husband, incoming chairman of the United Nations committee on the rights of people with disabilities, Professor Ron McCallum have made submissions to the government to get those rules changed.

Professor Mary Crock joined Peter on the line this morning.

With the ageing population on the rise and an alarming shortage of health workers, Australia faces a severe crisis in the health department. By 20-20 ninety thousand nurses would have retired and not as many would have replaced them.

The situation is perhaps worst in South Australia where apart from being the lowest paid…. figures indicate that currently the state is short by about 500 nurses.  With lower numbers getting into the profession option of importing these skills from overseas is slowly becoming inevitable.

If the recent fiery meeting of Charles Sturt Council is anything to go by, the job of selling the St Clair reserve land swap at Woodville as an integral part of the Transit Oriented Development west of the city will be a difficult one. Residents have mobilised to fight the lands swap, while state government MP’s try to win support.

Selecting a school for your children is an incredibly important decision, and the Federal Government plans on a new website containing school test results to enable parents to make decisions on where their kids will be educated.

But critics say the data will enable league tables to be created, effectively naming and shaming schools.

The Australian Education Union held a forum on Friday school league tables.

Feast 2009 kicked off on the weekend, with a packed program through ’til November 29.

It’s got a home grown theme this year, showcasing local artists and performances.

Heather Frahn started an event in 2007 that’s coming up this weekend, called Sing Out, which is a a song writing project where songs have been woven from the real life stories of gay and lesbian participants.

This morning, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will make an apology to Forgotten Australians – the half a million children raised in institutions, orphanages and foster care throughout the last century.

The number also includes about 7,000 child migrants.

The apology follows a recommendation of a 2004 Senate report into Australians who suffered neglect and abuse while in state care.

To discuss what this apology means for the future Peter spoke with Caroline Caroll, Chair of the Alliance of Forgotten Australians.

39 year old Army Psychiatrist, Major Nidal Malik Hassan, reportedly entered a medical facility within the army base and began shooting. Killing 13 and wounding 29 before he was incapacitated by a police officer.

Major Hassan is currently recuperating in hospital and is headed for military trial where he could face the death penalty.  

The media frenzy over the incident perhaps matches the public shock and sadness.

The question that is emerging is whether US Intelligence failed or ignored the signs that led ultimately to this bloody massacre.
