Some have called it “Privatisation by Stealth”, but Adelaide Lord Mayor, Stephen Yarwood, disagrees. He believes that the new Board will be a great step forward in the running of the Central Market, which will lead to better marketing and property values.
City Councillor, Anne Moran, a former Chair of the Central Market Sub-committee, however, is not so sure.
Tim Brunero spoke to the Councillor this morning, and asked her why she was so nervous about the new Board.

The SACOSS Cost of Living Update released today reveals the cost of health to consumers is consistently and significantly ahead of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), and SACOSS says health cannot be ignored in the cost of living debate.

In November 2004, Cameron Doomadgee was arrested for drunkenness.
Forty-five minutes later Mr. Doomadgee was dead, with four broken ribs and a liver almost cleaved in two.
Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley has denied assaulting Mr. Doomadgee, maintaining that he fell.

“The Tall Man” is a multi-award-winning documentary based on the novel of the same name by Chloe Hooper, the documentary winning the 2011 Walkley Award, the AWG Award, and the Best Documentary Award at the Native Film Festival in Toronto.

Yasmin Bright, from our sister station, 2SER in Sydney, spoke to Director, Tony Krawitz, and asked him why he wanted to become part of the documentary team.

With the increased reliance on a technology, some public schools have introduced fees up to a thousand dollars, which includes providing the student with a lap top computer.

So is education in Australia’s public school system as free or cheap as it used to be?

To discuss the rising cost of sending children to public schools, Tim Brunero spoke to the President of the Australian Council of State School Organisations, Peter Garrigan.

Tony Abbot and the Tent Embassy

This year’s Aboriginal Tent Embassy will certainly be well-remembered for years to come – perhaps least of all for its 40^th anniversary.
Last Thursday 200 activists from the Tent Embassy stormed a nearby Australia Day lunch being attended by Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, after Tony Abbott’s comments were (perhaps) misinterpreted.
Videos of the ugly incident garnered major national and worldwide media attention, but Indigenous leaders have been quick to criticise the protestors for taking the wrong approach to shedding light on the Aboriginal cause.
Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Social Justice Commissioner Mick Gooda has also condemned the actions of the activists and he spoke to Tim Brunero this morning.

Dumped – The Global Fund to Fight Malaria and AIDS

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is worried. These are the guys who save 100,000 lives a month, and who supply AIDS drugs to 48% of all people with AIDS around the world.
But it’s not the daunting size of their task that’s got them worried. It’s the fact a whole bunch of countries cut back or just dumped their contribution to the Fund due to the recent worldwide economic downturn, and they want our Government to bring forward it’s commitment to kick $170 million in the can between the years of 2011-13.
Tim Brunero spoke to the Director of the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations, Rob Lake, about the Global Fund, and how many people have AIDS, TB and Malaria.

Aboriginal Tent Embassy

Dr. Irene Watson is an Indigenous woman of Tanganekald and Mein-tangkid peoples, the traditional owners of the Coorong and lower southeast of South Australia, a lawyer and academic.

She has published and lectured extensively on the construction of Aboriginal peoples’ identities in both domestic and international law.

Yesterday marked the 40^th Anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, and Nunga Wangga’s Andrea Fraser caught up with Dr.Irene Watson, as she recalled that the very first Aboriginal Tent Embassy was in fact formed in Adelaide’s park lands in 1971.

Survival Day, the other side of Australia Day

So for a lot of people Australia Day will be spent on backyard barbies, the cricket, but to many others Australia Day takes a different meaning.

This year Survival Day marks the 40^th Anniversary of the Tent Embassy, a protest in Canberra to represent the political rights ofAustralia’s indigenous population.

The occasion will be recognised with an event at the Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute, where Radio Adelaide will be broadcasting live from 3pm.

Andrea Fraser from Radio Adelaide’s Nunga Wangga program spoke to Jordan Archer about the event, and started with an acknowledgement.

Iran – Are we all in serious trouble?

Iran scored an Oscar Nomination for best foreign language film with “A Separation”, but outside of Hollywood all is not well between Iran and the West.

Australia has followed the European Union in stopping oil imports from the country, and the US, France and Britain have sent warships near to Iran.

The conflict is over the Strait of Hormuz, which has around twenty per cent of the world’s oil go through it.

Associate Professor Felix Patrikeeff from the school of history and politics at the University of Adelaide told Jordan Archer about what makes the Strait of Hormuz so important.

Guess who picked up the bill from Queen’s recent tour of Oz?

You and me that’s who.

During her recent 11 day tour of Australia in October, the Queens passed out alot of gifts to Australian dignitaries.

The only problem was she passed the bill onto the tax-payer, in a little-know regal practice called “passing the costs to the realms”.

This time round 40 dignitaries, including Prime Minister Julia Gillard, and Governor-General Quentin Bryce, received framed photographs and other mementos from the Queen, at a cost of over $14,000. The nation is also liable for the cost of the tour, amounting to more than $1 million.

General Michael Keating, AO, chair of the Australian Republican Movement spoke about the Queen’s unpaid bills and the future of the monarchy supplying our head of state.

Are We Uncle Sam’s Pirate Pawn?

Does the entertainment industry need to change their attitude to online piracy? Rather than prosecuting pirates, why not simply make it cheap and easy for consumers to download their products?

Instead of leaning on the Kiwi’s to storm the compounds of alleged pirates holed up in their panic rooms with sawn-off shotguns couldn’t they simply get on board with the brave new world that is the internet?

Even the proposed SOPA and PIPA Bills in the USA generated great amounts of backlash over the past week, with many user-generated sites shutting down in protest of the bills. Most spectacularly Wikipedia’s 24 hour blackout.

Testing, Testing 1 – 2 – Tree…?

Results from the recent NAPLAN tests show an alarming disparity between metropolitan and regional students, sometimes up to 20%.

And years 3, 5, 7 and 9 results for South Australian students are only higher than the Northern Territory community.

Whilst the results are on par with students from Western Australia, alarmingly they are lower than those of New South Wales and Victoria.

Taking a punt on a back flip

Over the weekend the Federal Government backflipped on its decision to introduce mandatory pre-commitment technology in Australian poker machines nationally by 2014.

Instead we’ll get a trial in the ACT this year with a decision to be made after the next election and a $250 withdrawal limit on ATM’s at gaming venues.

This backflip has Wilkie annoyed and he’s withdrawn his support for the Labor party, sort of, theoretically leaving the government once again with a one seat majority in Parliament.

Opposition MP’s and other anti-gambling campaigners are concerned that this will only prolong any real action on the issue.

One person who’s passionately anti-pokies is South Australian Senator Nick Xenophon and Tim Brunero spoke to him about this back flip on poker machine reform.

Rocking out with Neo-Nazis; free speech or inciting hatred?

It’s festival season, the Fringe, Adelaide Festival, WOMAD – and we’re all picking out which events we’ll go to – but what about the neo-Nazi aligned Hammered festival?

It’s to be held in Queensland– unsurprisingly it will be heavy metal music.

The festival is organised by the Southern Cross Hammerskins and ‘white resistance’ group, Blood and Honour Australia, which states it’s mission is to “secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.”

The event be on April 21 – suspiciously close to Hitler’s birthday.

There have been calls to have it banned but the Labor government has refused to, saying it can’t stop ‘morons’ gathering but it will step in if anyone in attendance incites violence or commits racial vilification.

Tim Brunero spoke to Antony Lowenstein, a blogger, activist, author whose works include My Israel Question and online media contributor for New Matilda and Crikey about the controversy surrounding the event.

Staying Beach Smart in Summer

Drownings at Australian beaches have been in the headlines with two deaths in as many days. But as a nation of keen outdoorsy types, these incidents can surely be avoided.

Hacker Raids and Hospital Foods

In today’s News From New Zealand, Will Pollard tells Tim Brunero about the Kiwi woman who was so disgusted with hospital food that she challenged the Head of the Mid-Central District Health Board to try to eat one of the Hospital’s “disgusting” meals. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Head of the Board refused. Will tells Tim what he said.

New Zealand promoters have said that they will not run another Big Day Out, as ticket sales are so far down it’s not a viable proposition.

The arrest in New Zealand of a notorious download “facilitator” who has been known to use his helicopter to get breakfast, has netted New Zealand Police $NZ6 million in luxury cars and $NZ10 million in various financial institutions. The arrest came as New Zealand Police acted for US Federal Authorities in a crack-down against illegal file-sharing, money-laundering, racketeering, and Copyright infringements.

Primaries and Secondaries – US Republican Race

Well, the American Republican Primaries are getting very interesting – last week Mitt Romney was accused of cheating on his taxes on investments held in the Cayman Islands, and potentially ruining his reputation with the voters.
We also saw the race go from five candidates down to four with the withdrawal of Texan Governor, Rick Perry; while over the weekend, Newt Gingrich staked his claim on the Candidacy by winning the South Carolina Primary.

Indigenous Constitution Amendments

A report released on Thursday detailing changes to the Constitution to recognise Indigenous Australians has caused a sea of opinions from both sides of politics.
The 300-page proposal recommends the Constitution be changed to remove racist sections of the document, while creating a section that legislates for the “advancement” of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, and the protection of their culture.
But those opposing the amendments feel they are too broad, and may blur the lines between what is considered racist and what isn’t.To find out what this means for the Indigenous Community, Tim Brunero spoke to the State Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement, Khatija Thomas.

Driving is something we all enjoy, maybe on a Sunday afternoon, maybe heading down to the coast, or even heading interstate on an extended journey, but it can also be a very dangerous activity, especially when conditions aren’t made for road use.
The RAA has just compiled a report that measures the state’s riskiest stretches of road, with around 20% of all highways tested falling under the “high-risk” category.
We can easily blame dodgy roads for causing major incidents, but how can everyday motorists become safer on our roads?
Well the Senior Manager of Mobility and Safety at the RAA, Wendy Bevan, was part of this report and she spoke to Tim Brunero this morning. Tim began by asking Wendy about that 20% failure rate.

Debating Debt

State and Territory net debt is set to surge by 40 percent according to the Australian newspaper from $129 billion to 183.7 billion in 2015 to fund infrastructure upgrades and spending on health, education and services.

But is debt bad if it is to fund essential services? After all, important projects like the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge took 70-80 years to pay off.

Associate Professor John Spoehr, the Executive Director of the Centre for Labour Research at the University of Adelaide, spoke to Tim Brunero about our politicians’ obsession with debt and whether or not debt is a bad thing.

Whining About Salty Wines

If you’ve always thought your favourite drop of wine was just that touch too salty, you’re probably right, especially if you’re drinking red. Apparently salt in grapes is stored in the skins so red wines, which have their skins kept on for the crush, have more salt. On top of that some red grapes absorb more salt – shiraz roots for example will absorb more than chardonnay.

What do to do about this problem?

Well researchers at the South Australian Research and Development Institute are looking into ways of making better use of rainfall to flush salt out of soil, therefore producing higher quality wine. Given the high volumes of wine production and consumption in SA alone, this is certainly important research.

Tim Brunero caught up with Rob Stevens from SARDI Research, and asked him about salt content.

Burger Rage and Broken Ships

An Auckland man who smashed up a Wendy’s store in Lynfield has been charged after his stuffed up burger order saw him fly into a rage.

David Junior Ilolahia will appear in Auckland District Court, charged with threatening behaviour, assaulting police, disorderly behaviour and resisting police after he allegedly smashed tills, flipped tables and attacked a police officer.

Meanwhile the stricken container ship, “Rena” that ran aground last year, broke in two last weekend, spilling more oil and tonnes of tiny plastic pellets from a container.

Using Trans Fats for Good

When you first hear the names Chuck the Welder and Bob the Engineer you may be forgiven for thinking you’re hearing the beginnings of a poorly constructed joke.

These four twenty something Aussie fellas have just faced a 12,000 kilometre road trip from Tassie to the Top End, using a modified 4WD burning fish and chip shop oil, all in the name of sustainability.

Their journey has been chronicled in a 12-part National Geographic series, called The Aussie Way Up, which made its world premiere last night.

Autonomy for the Torres Strait

Hope for Climate Change

The 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Conference left many climate hopefuls with a bitter taste in their mouths with some placing the blame for its breakdown on China.

The Durban Conference however has seen a massive turnaround for the world’s largest developing nations, with China and India agreeing not to block a conference decision to negotiate a legally binding agreement for the future.

So is there now hope for there to be global action on climate change?

Tim Brunero spoke with Will McGoldrick, the Policy and Research Manager of The Climate Institute, about the conference outcomes.

Gen Y often gets a hard time from the media for being disconnected, uninterested and apathetic.

But maybe there is a reason for all this disinterest.

Relationships Australia has published a study that has found 25-34 year olds as the loneliest age group, closely followed by the 18-24 year olds.

Worse to these statistics is that although, for some the holiday season is full of fun and family… for these lonely young people, it’s often the worst.

Well the Uniting Church is launching a month-long media campaign to combat this problem of loneliness and this morning Tim Brunero was joined by Reverend Mark Boyce from the Lyell McEwin Hospital to talk about the initiative and whether he was surprised by the results.

From Russia with corruption; Putin on a brave face

They’ve been protesting the length and breadth of the Middle East to try to win democracy and now it has spread to Russia.

Up to 100,000 people turned out to demonstrations in the last couple of days, the largest anti-government protests post-Soviet Russia has ever seen.

And keep in mind it’s winter over there!

They’re unhappy because they believe last week’s parliamentary elections were rigged.

And they want to see Vladimir Putin out on his ear.

The 59-year-old Russian strongman has dominated Russian politics for over a decade – for 8 years as President and now as Prime Minister.

He’s even planning to run for President again in March.

So what’s going on in Russia? Is it a true democracy? Or is it a dangerous place where the rule of law comes second to corruption and criminality?

Tim Brunero spoke to Russia expert Professor Felix Patrikeeff from the University of Adelaide about whether or not Russia even has democracy.

Having played with bands like The Middle East and Cloud Control and set out on their own national album tour, the group has carved a name for themselves in Australia with their brand of Americana-fused folk-rock.
Now they’re back in Adelaide for one last hurrah in 2011 to play an acoustic set at the Grace Emily Hotel this Thursday night.

Love him or hate him, Kyle Sandilands is one of the latest high-profile Australians to be tangled in a social media scandal.
Austereo boss Guy Dobson went on record to blame social media for the backlash against the radio shock jock following his comments on a news.com.au journalist, while thousands flocked to their Facebook and Twitter accounts to petition for his sacking.
It seems we’re in a day and age where a trending topic, a Facebook page or a hashtag can make all the difference, and someone who is very well acquainted with that is Adelaide’s very own social media guru, founding member of Social Media Adelaide and director of Prakky, Michelle Prak, and she spoke to Tim Brunero this morning.

Tweeting The Universe: Author Marcus Chown

It has certainly been a big week for the universe. With the finding of a “super Earth” and lunar eclipses last week, scientists discovered the biggest black holes ever recorded.
These black holes are said to be some of the oldest in our galaxy, and form the cornerstone of our universe’s existence.
But will we slowly slip away into the abyss of our universe?
One man who knows a lot about this scenario is author Marcus Chown, who has just released a book entitled “Tweeting The Universe” which looks at the very mind-blowing things that our universe is filled with.
From London, he spoke to Tim Brunero this morning, and Tim asked him if we were likely to get lost in a black hole any time soon.

Selling Our Forests: Richard Sage – Grant Council Mayor

The privatization of South Australia’s timber industry has heightened in the past week, with 4,000 local residents turning out to a rally in Mount Gambier following a visit by Premier Jay Weatherill last Thursday.
This visit was the first by a South Australian premier in 5 years.
The issue has sparked plenty of debate in the state’s South-East, with many worried about the future job prospects in the region given the timber industry’s influence on local residents, and locals are becoming deeply concerned that ownership of the forests may be lost and jobs headed overseas.
So can the State Government find a solution that will make the community happy?
Tim Brunero spoke to Grant Council Mayor, Richard Sage, and asked him about the likely effects of privatizing the industry.

Another Super Profits Tax: Professor John Freebairn – Melbourne University

How could the Federal Labor Government possibly be thinking about another super profits tax? The last one they proposed led to a $100 million advertising campaign being waged against them by the big miners – and they had to depose Kevin Rudd just to stop the damage.
Treasury working group is beavering away on something that sounds awfully like one – it’s been dubbed a “Robin Hood” company tax.
It would mean MOST Australian companies would pay no tax on their earnings, while some would pay a much higher rate of “super tax” on large profits.
It would mean banks and mining companies would pay more tax, but others, like manufacturers, would pay nothing.
Tim Brunero spoke a member of the Treasury working group working on this – Professor John Freebairn, from Melbourne University.

Fighting Tooth & Nail for art’s sake: Interview with Jake Holmes and Jack Ladd

The Adelaide art scene is getting more and more interesting with the latest artist-run gallery to pop up in Adelaide.

Tonight is the Grand Opening Exhibition and official launch of artist studio space and gallery Tooth and Nail, with the involvement of a huge collective of talented artists and thirteen artist studios, engraving equipment and a printing press.

We were joined this morning by one of the founders, Jake Holmes aka Jake One, and artist Jack Ladd.

The grand opening of the exhibition is tonight, at 12 Eliza St, City (near light square) and runs from 6 til 11pm.

“Where the Pavement Meets the Sand” – Art Exhibition At Urban Cow Studio

“Where the Pavement Meets the Sand” is a solo exhibition on at Urban Cow Studio, which showcases the acrylic landscape paintings and sculptures of artist, Steve O’Connor, who moved fromVictoria to South Australia when he was a teenager.

Jennie Lenman caught up for a chat with Steve to talk about how he uses his art to express his thoughts and memories.
