We looked earlier at the partnership between Aberfoyle Park high School and Raytheon Australia that involves the company providing the school with around $450,000 over three years.

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom has condemned the partnership, but the school says the partnership will help prepare students for careers in engineering and science.

The principal of Aberfoyle Park High School, Alan Phelps joined Peter in the studio to put forward his side of the debate.

Today is Remembrance Day, the day in 1918 when the first World War ended and is also a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and of civilians in times of war.

After decades of delivering Australians the iconic Berri Fruit Juice the factory where the drinks began will close mid next year.

National Foods, the company who owns Berri Ltd made the announcement late yesterday to close the juice plant in June next year, shedding the final 64 jobs.

A Reader’s Digest survey revealed that Australians care about the planet… but they are suffering ‘green fatigue’ after constantly hearing consumer warnings and well meaning advice.

Twenty years ago today, the Berlin Wall came down, in an event that helped prompt an end to the Cold War, the beginning to the end of communism, and opened up the physical and ideological border, otherwise known as the ‘Iron Curtain’ between East and West Germany.

For more than a quarter of a century, the 100 mile long barrier, armed with barb wire and soldiers with machine guns blocked people from getting in or out, and 136 people lost their lives trying to cross it.

Now almost fifty years since it was erected, world leaders from then and now, along with an estimated 100,000 people are expected to attend celebrations to mark the anniversary of its demise, in what’s being dubbed the ‘Festival of Freedom’.

Over the last 669 days, South Australia has witnessed various protests from its Education Union.

From strikes to marches, to loud gatherings outside the parliament, to sending an apple a day to Parliamentarians, the union has left no stone unturned in their pursuit to get their 21 per-cent pay hike for teachers.

But the Government hasn’t budged beyond their offer to up the pay by 14.21 per-cent.

Apparently this longest industrial dispute will now get resolved by the Industrial Relation Commission’s decision.

A report released by the Australian Institute of health and welfare last Friday, recorded a $444 million dollar increase on public health spending in Australia last year.

This jump was largely attributed to the various national immunisation programs in place in particular the cervical cancer vaccination.

Yet the report also found that despite this overall increase in immunisation spending nationally, South Australia has the lowest spend per person on organised immunisation programs.

With so many people involved and so many different individual agendas it is not just one of the largest challenges facing our generation but also represents the best chance we have of reversing current emissions trends in time to prevent the climate chaos.

The political talk of late in regard to asylum seekers tends to paint a general picture of them in an unfavourable light. But for people seeking asylum in Australia they are fleeing often horrendous conditions in their home countries.

The South Australian Council for Civil Liberties has commenced a campaign for us to show support for refugees by wearing a key and Peter was joined by its chair Claire O’Connor.

You may be surprised at the number of everyday products that include palm oil, it can be present in many foods as well as detergents and cosmetics. And you may not know that what you are buying contains palm oil as it can simply be listed as ‘vegetable oil’.

 The trouble with palm oil is the unsustainable way its produced…rainforests are cleared destroying the habitat of Orang-utans and other endangered species and its producing has a major carbon footprint.

A roundtable on sustainable palm oil has been underway in Malaysia, but Friends of the Earth don’t see certification of palm oil as a solution to the environmental damage and human rights violations caused by the plantations.

Early this week an international poll found that although almost two thirds of the world think a new global deal to cut greenhouse emissions is ‘very important’; financial stability still reigns as the primary issue concerning the international community. 

The survey, conducted in 12 countries, found that concern amongst Australians fell by 14 per cent – the most of any country. 

So are Australians being too short sighted in setting their priorities?

Only around 14,000 Australian sea lions remain in the wild, and despite it being illegal to hunt them, and their status as a protected species, numbers are still dwindling. This is due to around 300 a year getting caught in shark fishing nets that overlap the foraging grounds of the female sea lions.

Yesterday was the re-opening of the Great Australian Bight shark fishing season with enough gillnets set to span the width of the state’s coastline seven times over.

Peter asked Marine Campaigner from the Wilderness Society SA, while hunting sea lions is prohibited, if knowingly killing them in shark nets is the same thing, or if this falls into a different category…

As the season changes and the sun shines, households’ with solar panels installed on there roofs will be reaping the benefits of generating their own power, and minimising their carbon emissions. But a loophole in South Australia’s Solar feed-in scheme has meant power retailers have been able to gain the benefits rather than those people who have gone to the expense of installing their own solar panels.

Greens MLC Mark Parnell has been pressing the state government to close the loophole, which the Premier announced he would do… but the question remains as to when?

As of last weekend, all incandescent light bulb sales are banned following a decision by the Federal Government.

That means that the 71 million incandescent light bulbs in stockpiles and households in Australia will be heading straight to the land fill.

Last Friday we reported on the protests happening not only in Adelaide but around the world, as part of International Day of Climate Action.

Thousands of people rallied to try and foster an agreement between world leaders that something needs to be done about climate change.

350.org was the organisation behind it all, with 350 standing for their target of 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, instead of around 390.

Well just like in Australia, the issue of climate change is currently being hotly debated in America.

A new tool has been launched to help teachers prepare secondary school students to make the transition to work safely.

Statistics show that young people are more likely to be injured at work and are often unfamiliar with workplace hazards and safety procedures.

In the past students would have to undergo extensive training once they leave high school to start a full-time career and some students have also been refused work experience or placements due to insurance.

So will this new tool help young people to obtain their dream jobs and be safer in the work place?

Australia is well-known for its unique marine life and if you visit any of the aquariums set up in our capital cities you will get a glimpse of some of these fascinating creatures. 

One individual visiting aquariums across Australia at the moment is Jeremy Brodt from the New England Aquarium in Boston, USA.

He interested in looking at research on sea dragons in a bid to help conserve their habitats and save them from extinction.

Psychology master students at the University of Adelaide have been given the opportunity to work in a psych clinic dealing with children in government care or at risk of abuse or neglect.

The scheme is a collaboration between the University of Adelaide and the Department of Families and Communities.

The clinic is called Ngartunna Wiltanendi, an Aboriginal term meaning “children growing stronger”, and was opened this week.

Clinic Director Michelle Tonkin’Smith joined Kathryn in the studio this morning to tell us how it’s been operating.

Chronic deafness caused by ear diseases in Aboriginal school children has become so bad schools are installing amplifiers for teachers in every classroom.

It comes after a five-year study between 2003 and 2008 found that of the seven-hundred children in the APY lands, three quarters failed a standard hearing test.

The report was conducted by Flinders University Associate Professor Linnett Sanchez, who spoke to Kathryn this morning.

Well it seems sinus change is upon us….and it’s affecting different individuals in different ways.

Media outlets across the country have been reporting the year of two thousand and nine is the worst for hay fever suffers as experts believe the above average rainfall is to blame.

But are we really experiencing the worst year for hay fever sufferers and who is sinus change primary target?

There could be a state first in the city of Mitcham, with the council considering a voluntary green levy due to fears it will fail to meet its 2010 emissions target of a twenty per cent reduction since 1999.

The possible move follows a council report showing Mitcham already close to doubling its 2010 carbon emissions target in 2007.

The optional charge is being pushed by Councillor Zane Young, who spoke to Kathryn this morning.

Should people have the right to die?

According to the latest Newspoll report, 87% of South Australians think voluntary euthanasia should be legalised.

President of South Australian Voluntary Euthanasia Society (SAVES), Frances Coombe, says the result should encourage MPs to support the legislation, which is already before the South Australian parliament. She spoke to Kathryn about the poll and sample size taken for the research.

One in seven Australians will be living with type two diabetes by 2050.

Australia is set to slash its catch of blue sea tuna by up to 25 percent in response to a meeting last week that called for action to preserve stocks of overfished vulnerable species.

We’ve heard over the past few days’ news that Bridgestone will close its 44-year-old Adelaide tyre manufacturing plant which employs 600 workers.

The Federal government is planning a forum in November to discuss their ‘Education Revolution.’

One of the issues to be discussed is the introduction of league tables to rank high schools.

This has received some harsh criticism because of the belief that the simplistic nature of the system already introduced in some parts of the United States and Britain can give schools an unwarranted bad reputation.

The Adelaide City Council has announced that Wednesday trading at the Central Markets will become permanent under controversial reforms which some traders are not happy about.

The proposed changes follow a year-long trial of optional Wednesday trading that resulted in only sixty per cent of stallholders opening.

In a letter to be tabled at this week’s council meeting, Central Market Traders Association President Franz Knoll is calling for voluntary Wednesday trading between 11am and 3pm.

Health professionals have found increasing links between heart disease and depression, which has made it harder for heart disease sufferers to recover from both these conditions.

Well now a new Adelaide study is trialling whether fish oil capsules can help reduce the symptom of depression in people with heart disease.

Population growth and urban development is a big focus of politics in Australia presently. Just last week Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was Calling on the nation to embrace “Big Australia”.

Radioactive waste from the RAAF base at Edinburgh may be moved to a new storage facility in the Woomera Prohibited area.

The waste, of low and intermediate level would be housed in what was an old explosives storage building – the Defence Department is seeking license approvals for the upgrade.

Around 80 44-gallon drums of waste from Edinburgh, and 200 drums from a nearby Woomera site are likely to be housed their if approvals are granted.

A new plan to simplify Australia’s tax system may see millions of taxpayers be spared from filling in annual tax returns.

 The reform would see taxpayers receive a one-page summary from the tax office, including a standard deduction for necessary work expenses and salary details.

If taxpayers are happy with the calculation, they would then simply tick the form, lodge it over the internet and wait for their refund.
