Kate Gauthier – The Refugee Debate

The Refugee debate took another turn this week with the High Court stopping the Gillard Government flying off its first planeload of refugees as part of the so-called “Malaysia Solution”.

It’s the latest turn in an increasingly heated public debate on how to deal with this issue. The last months have seen riots, sit-ins on the roofs of detention centres and what some have called bumbling policy on the run by the Gillard Government.

Well what does it all mean?

Kate Gauthier – Associate lecturer at the Australian National University – argues that policy makers are making decisions not based on what’s best for the community – but what is best for their political party.
