Toumani Diabate brings the Kora to South Australia

The term ‘world music’ was coined in the late eighties and Malian musician Toumani Diabate was one of the first artists to be classified under the world music banner.

Toumani was born into a griot family, a respected care-taker of the music traditions of Mali, but he’s also taken his harp-like instrument, the 21 string kora, onto the global stage through collaborations with Bjork, Taj Mahal and many others.

In October Toumani Diabate will perform at the WOMAD Earth Station event in Belair National Park and Michelle Smith recently caught up with him to find out more about his music.
