Historic Mabo decision – 20 years on

Sunday 3 June is Mabo Day. This year marks 20 years since the historic Mabo decision was handed down after Eddie Koiki Mabo’s long court battles.

Unfortunately, he didn’t live long enough to celebrate the victory of his work.

The Mabo decision was a watershed in Australia’s history as it was the first time that the legal system acknowledged that Indigenous people did live here before colonisation.

Stevie Goldsmith of Nunga Wangga spoke with Gail Mabo, one of Eddie’s seven children, who’s been a cultural consultant on the upcoming Mabo telemovie. Torres Strait Islander actor Jimi Bani stars as Eddie and AFI winner, Deborah Mailman is Eddie’s wife Bonita.

He started off by asking Gail whether she thought that wider Australia has finally embraced the Mabo decision.
