SA: the leading recycling state Australia has one of the best recycling schemes in the country. We have had the container deposit scheme since 1977.  Until this year, SA was the only state with this scheme because the Northern Territory has also implemented the container deposit scheme.

Other state governments are discussing whether this scheme should be rolled out nationally to reduce the amount of recyclable material from being dumped into landfill.

About 80-85% of bottles and cans are recyled in SA each year, compared to other states with 60%. But beverage companies are charging South Australians  20 cents more for their beverages.

Tim Brunero spoke to the Excutive Director of KESAB, John Phillips, about why we are paying more for our beverages and the SA’s recycling scheme.
