The voices of a new Cambodia

It’s hard to believe that just 37 years ago Cambodia was enduring a 4 year reign of terror that saw nearly 2 million people murdered.

The Khmer Rouge, also known as the Khmer Communist Party, aimed to achieve ‘Year Zero’ in Cambodia, taking the country back to a peasant economy with no class divisions, money, books, schools or hospitals. The result of their policies was genocide.

This dark time in Cambodia’s history is behind the show Cambodia Sun Rising which is here in Adelaide for the OzAsia festival.

The story is retold by a number of young performers from the Sunrise Children’s Village in Cambodia, who symbolize the hope and optimism emerging through the past.

Bill Walter spoke to Creative Director, Cate Fowler about the remarkable world premiere.
